Spring Cleaning Your Pool
As winter draws to a close and spring approaches, many people feel the urge to participate in spring cleaning to get everything ready for the summer. People also spend more time outdoors as the temperature rises. This makes spring a great time to clean your pool. Cleaning should begin at least a week before first use if the pool has not been used for an extended period of time. There are certain procedures involved in cleaning a pool, especially if it has not been utilized during the winter months. Fortunately, the process is not difficult and once it is completed, your pool will be ready to entertain your family and guests in the months ahead.
Clean and Remove the Cover During Spring Cleaning
The first step to cleaning your pool is to remove the cover. Before you start the removal process, be sure to clean up any debris or dirt that may have accumulated on top of the cover so it does not contaminate the pool. Standing water on top of the cover can be removed with a pump. Once the cover is off, any visible dirt can be removed with a soft brush and mild detergent. Be sure to rinse the cover thoroughly and completely dry it before storing it to prevent mold growth.
Check the Pump and Filter
Examine your pump and filter for any debris or issues during spring cleaning. Be sure that water is flowing at a smooth and steady rate. Remove any winterizing plugs and monitor the pump pressure to ensure air is not trapped in the system. This is a good time to inspect any mechanical parts for wear or breakage and replace them as needed. Don’t forget to inspect your heater too. Clean any filters and ensure proper operation of all components.
Add Water and Test
It is normal for a low water level if the pool has not been used for a while. Add water as necessary during spring cleaning to bring the level back to the required capacity. Do not test the water’s chemistry until you have added what is needed. Let the pump circulate the water for several hours before performing the test to obtain the most accurate results, especially if you added water. Use the results of the test to adjust the pH, chlorine content, and alkalinity as needed. If the chemistry is significantly off or the pool was excessively dirty, shocking the pool may be a more efficient approach.
Skim and Vacuum
Use a skimmer net to remove any surface debris that may have accumulated during the winter or through the cleaning process. Run a pool vacuum until the bottom of the pool is cleaned as well. This is also an excellent time to clean any pool toys or accessories that may have been stored away.
