Are you thinking about building a new pool? If you are still trying to get a grasp on all the options and features that can come along with this kind of project, we’re here to help. We’ve built a considerable number of pools, and hopefully, we can assist you in this overwhelming process. Here we’ll cover the main decisions you will need to make before you break ground.

How big do you want your pool to be?

Most pools fall into one of the following categories: 10×20, 15×30, and 20×40. There are a number of factors that will decide which size is best for you. Are you planning to swim laps or relax on a bench seat? Does it need to be big enough for just your family or the whole neighborhood?

Also, how much space do you have to work with? You’ll probably want to have some backyard left when you’re finished, so take that into consideration. Using a measuring tape to mark out where you envision your new pool will help you get a good idea of what size it should be. You might be surprised how the shape of your yard or positioning of your pool will affect your decision.

Don’t forget to keep in mind your city’s requirements when measuring your desired pool. Most cities have a minimum distance that your pool must set inside your exterior property lines or city easements. Here are the current requirements for some major cities in Maricopa County:

Phoenix — 3 feet

Peoria — 4 feet

Scottsdale — 2 feet

What shape do you want your pool to be?

Pools can come in virtually any shape, but similar to shopping for houses, it’s good to know what style you like. After you’ve taken into account the pool’s size and position, think about what shape you would like to see there. The most common shape for pools is a rectangle, but you may also consider a lagoon, roman, kidney, or L-shaped pool. The options are endless, so spend some time researching your favorites.

What about the bells and whistles?

Now that you have a general idea of the pool you want, start thinking about the features you are interested in. Think of this like adding features to the base model of a car. You have the necessities, but what really makes your pool fun to be in is the added touch of special features.

Benches, waterfalls, and attached spas are some common features, but you can elevate your pool in a number of different ways. Perhaps you want a slide and diving board for the kids, or maybe a swim-up bar for the adults. The are plenty of soothing, elegant options as well like a waterfall or an infinity edge.
