How to Heat Your Pool and Extend Your Swimming Season

As we get closer and closer to Christmas, people all around the Valley are starting to turn the heaters on inside their home. Granted, it’s not that cold in Phoenix, but when you’re used to 100+ degrees it can feel downright chilly sometimes. But, with a nice day sprinkled in every now and then, wouldn’t it be nice to still be able to enjoy your pool? Well, if you have a pool heater, that may be a possibility. So, let’s talk about some of the best and most common methods available:

Heat Pumps

The initial cost of a heat pump is more than other heating options, but in the long run, it is more energy-efficient and cheaper than natural gas or propane. Heat pumps work by pulling heat from the outside air and transferring it to your pool water using electricity. Because of the way they function, heat pumps work best when the outside temperature is above 50°F. As long as you don’t live in a super cold climate, heats pumps can provide a 20-degree increase in your pool’s temperature.

Gas Heaters

One of the most popular heating solutions for pools is gas. Gas heaters are so common because of their quick heating and reliability. When compared to heat pumps, their initial price is more affordable, and they can generate heat no matter what the outside temperature is. They are not as energy efficient as a heat pump, but they provide the largest temperature increase available.

Other Options

If you’re still looking for a third option, a solar pool heater might be a good fit. As you can image, solar heating works by using solar panels to absorb heat from the sun and transferring that heat to your pool. As long as it’s not cloudy or rainy, solar can provide a 15-degree increase to your water temperature without having to pay for electricity or gas.

Lastly, if you’re not concerned with heating your entire pool but instead just want to heat your spa, you might look into an electric spa heater. They are compact, easy to install, and don’t require a gas connection.
