How to Keep Kids Safe During Pool Season

Even though it might sound strange, many swimming accidents happen within the boundaries of people's homes.

Summer is a favorite season for every kid. While swimming and having fun, however, both children and parents should exercise caution. Reports show that most pool accidents occur between May and August.

Here are some tips on keeping children safe during pool season.

Secure the home pool

Even though it might sound strange, many swimming accidents happen within the boundaries of people's homes. Small children aged 5 to 10 are particularly vulnerable. Watching curious kids 24/7 isn't always possible, especially as they wander around the house and yard.

Installing fences, alarms, and protective covers for residential pools helps prevent accidents and keep children safe even when unsupervised. The fence should be high enough and cover the pool's perimeter. Cameras, pool covers, and gate alarms are additional features all parents should add to the pool area.

Another security measure is keeping the yard and play area separate. Children shouldn't play around the pool, ride bicycles, or do sports.

Protect children in public pools

While restricting the children's movement near the residential pool is possible, watching them in public areas is harder. If the parent isn't watching a child in a public pool, their safety is in the hands of lifeguards. However, for some parents, it's hard to put their children's lives in the hands of a lifeguard, considering there are many people, and lifeguards can't always detect and notice if someone is drowning.

For this reason, a better practice is assigning one of the parents to be a watcher at all times. This way, their attention isn't divided by other activities, like reading a book or texting on the phone.

Teach children to swim

The ability to swim doesn't prevent children from drowning. However, it decreases the risks and teaches children how to behave in a pool. If something happens, a child should know how to reach the safety of the pool's edge.

Furthermore, parents should also know how to swim. Usually, parents who never learned this skill transfer their fears to their children. Swimming lessons should be introduced into a child's life from a young age to eliminate the fear of water.

Parents should also learn CPR to be prepared in case accidents occur.

Children's safety is imperative

In a busy world, people get distracted easily. However, it could have dire consequences if you're on watch duty and caring for your and your neighbor's children in the swimming pool. One moment is all it takes for an accident to happen.
