Pool safety is always a hot topic in the summer, as you might imagine, but pool safety doesn’t have an offseason. Just because your pool is seeing less use doesn’t mean all risk is removed. So, how do you continue to keep your family safe around the pool even when it’s covered? Here are a few reminders to get you started.
Cover It Up
We’ve talked before about closing your pool during the winter months to cut down on maintenance, covering your pool with a heavy-duty safety cover also provides a great layer of protection. Of course, making sure your cover is well-maintained is a must, regularly checking for rips or tears. Be sure to keep the surface clean and dry as well to avoid unnecessary wear and keep everyone safe—even an inch of water can prove dangerous.
Don’t Change Too Much
Ideally, if you have a pool, you already have some established pool rules that everyone knows to follow. While no one may be getting in the water right now, simple things like “no running around the pool” and making sure children are always supervised are important year-round. Maintaining these guidelines throughout the winter is one of the easiest ways to avoid accidents even while your pool is closed. Really, if it isn’t broken, why fix it?
Lock It Down
Obviously, if you have a fence around your pool, you should keep it locked up during this time. Don’t stop there, though. Take this opportunity to make sure your barrier, gate, and lock are all in good condition. Also, remove anything that could work as an impromptu ladder for a child or pet. Chairs, tables, trashcans, or other climbable items should be moved away from the pool to remove any temptation from the craftier members of our families. With that being said, it’s essential to remember that a fence is no replacement for supervision. You are still the best safeguard against pool mishaps.
And for those who aren’t yet worried about pool safety because they don’t have a pool of their own, don’t forget that now is the perfect time to build.
