So much of pool safety is about having a plan. The way you prevent accidents or respond to them quickly and effectively is by knowing what you’re going to do beforehand. In order to help with this, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched a campaign called “Pool Safely: Simple Steps to Save Lives.” As part of the campaign, parents and kids are encouraged to take the Pool Safely Pledge and make family pools safer in just one minute.

The Pool Safely Pledge

Thousands have taken the pledge in 2019, which includes both adult and child versions. Having two versions ensures that everyone knows their part in pool and spa safety. The adult pledge focuses on how parents and guardians specifically can protect their children at the pool.

I pledge that I will…

  • Designate a water watcher every single time children in my care are in or near the water.

  • Make sure my kids know how to swim.

  • As a parent or guardian, learn CPR.

  • Always remove portable pool ladders when not in use.

  • Ensure all permanent pools have a proper fence and gate and safer drain covers.

The kid’s pledge is simpler, making it easy to remember and serving as a great introduction to pool safety for any child.

I pledge that I will…

  • Pool Safely in 2019.

  • Never swim alone.

  • Ask my parents to sign me up for swimming lessons.

  • Stay away from drains in the pool or hot tub.

  • Have fun and always follow these safety steps when I’m in and around the water.

Set aside a couple of minutes to take the pledge with your family today and make your pool safer for everyone. It takes virtually no time at all, and Pool Safely will give you a free pool safety toolkit when you do. Join Michael Phelps and 70,000 others in committing to water safety to this year because nothing is more important than keeping your family out of harm’s way.
