It’s a long-running joke at this point how Arizona weather isn’t really so bad because it’s a “dry heat.” And, while we would agree that an arid 100 degrees probably feels more comfortable than a humid 100 degrees, the lack of moisture comes with some problems of its own. When you add this to the plentiful amount of sunshine we receive on an average day, it’s easy to see the importance of putting some thought into protecting your skin while enjoying the outdoors. Having a pool makes the hot days much more bearable, but taking just a few simple steps before jumping in can protect your body in the long run. Here’s what to do.

You probably already know this—you really should wear sunscreen. But for most people, we treat sunscreen like flossing. We know we should do it more often, but we haven’t managed to change our habits. So, if it helps to spur you on, let’s cover a few reminders about why it’s crucial to keep your skin protected.

Protection From Sunburns

First, sunscreen does it the obvious—it prevents sunburns. With the depletion of the ozone layer, more and more harmful UV rays travel from the sun to your skin unimpeded. As you’ve probably experienced before, this leads to skin damage and painful sunburns. Sunscreens with high SPF levels prevent these unpleasant side effects.

Protection From Skin Cancer

Secondly, sunscreen helps prevents skin cancer. While sunburns are painful, skin cancer is downright dangerous, coming in as the most common form of cancer in the United States. When you apply sunscreen regularly, you are working to protect yourself from this issue and cutting your risk of contracting skin cancers in half.

Protection From Premature Aging

If you still need another reason to convince you that sunscreen is essential, it not only protects your skin but keeps it looking its best too. Wearing sunscreen prevents premature aging of your skin and helps you maintain an even skin tone. And all it takes to achieve these benefits is a few minutes of proper application. So, what’s stopping you?

Even with the harm that the sun can do, if these past few weeks of quarantine have taught us anything, it’s that staying inside forever is not a pleasant alternative. Thankfully, all it takes to stay protected is a little discipline. As always with pools, the name of the game is fun and safety. So, by all means enjoy your pool, but make sure to put on a bit of sunscreen first!
