As things warm up here in Arizona, we’re quickly approaching pool season, if you aren’t enjoying your pool already. Before you dive in headfirst, however, it’s important to refamiliarize yourself and your children with the basics of pool safety. Water Safety USA, for example, explains how everyone can develop “water competency,” which they describe as “being able to anticipate, avoid, and survive common drowning situations, as well as recognizing and aiding those in need.” Let’s bring down this big idea into three simple steps.

Improve Your Water Skills

As you can imagine, learning to swim is one of the best ways to protect yourself around the water. If someone in your family needs to improve their swimming skills, sign up for lessons or be intentional about learning safely at home. Strengthening skills such as floating, treading water, and swimming for short distances helps you be more comfortable in the water and keeps your family safer.

Be Water Smart

Being water smart can mean a lot of different things, but it’s essentially just practicing common sense around the water. If your little ones need to wear a lifejacket, make sure they have one and wear it consistently. If you don’t know basic emergency procedures like CPR, then learn it. Establish basic rules like “no roughhousing” or “no running around the pool” to avoid accidents. Lastly—and perhaps most importantly—always supervise your children when they are in or near the pool.

Help Others

Speaking of supervision, the third aspect of water competency is helping others. While we should make sure we have sufficient water skills and water smarts, it’s also extremely important to keep an eye out for those around us. In addition to knowing life-saving techniques like CPR, learning how to be a diligent water watcher is essential to maintaining water safety. The only thing better than knowing how to respond to an emergency is preventing them from ever happening in the first place.

At the end of the day, the best way to enjoy your pool is to enjoy it safely. After you’ve brushed up on your pool safety guidelines with your family, you’ll feel even better about unwinding by the pool this summer. And if you or someone you know would like to build a new pool to enjoy, don’t forget that we’re still open!
